The book involves three different creatures. The Moroi – the mortal vampires, The Strigoi – the evil and immortal vampires and the Dhampirs – half Moroi and half human. The Dhampirs are also called Guardians as they dedicate their lives to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi who would do anything to drink the blood of a Moroi.
The main character of the book is a young Dhampir called Rosalie. She is princess Vasilisas best friend and future Guardian. They share a secret bond that allows Rosalie to feel Vasilisas feelings and hear her thoughts. They had been on the run from the school for 2 years when they suddenly were brought back by the schools Guardians. Rosalie falls inlove with her trainer - the older, russian Guardian that is also assigned to protect the princess. Vasilisa falls in love with the dark and mysterious Christian. Rumors had spread around school from their return and soon wierd things starts to happen to the princess. She finds dead animales at the campus and a girl named Mia makes their lives much harder by spreading terrible rumors about the two girls. Someone is trying to get the princess hurt and Rosalie constantly has to rescue her from both herself and her uncle Prince Viktor Dashkov who wants to use Vasilisas healing powers to heal him from a terminal illness that will kill him very soon.
